“Halaal Pork” Was a Mistake
The Checkers store located in Rylands has received a warning from the Muslim Judicial Council after a pork product was mistakenly labeled as Halaal.
This incident sparked a reaction on social media on Tuesday when a shopper alerted mense to be wakker after discovering a package of minced meat that contained both beef and pork, yet displayed a certified Halaal sticker.
The photograph clearly indicated that the mince was composed of 55% beef, 24% pork, and 12% water, with an expiration date of 28 November.
Users on social media raised questions regarding how such an error could occur, especially since the store is recognized for exclusively selling Halaal products.
The MJC stated that they were informed of the issue and conducted an investigation, concluding that it was a result of human error.
“Checkers Rylands, a Halaal-certified outlet, exclusively offers Halaal meat products. We were made aware of a mislabeled meat product in the store that incorrectly suggested the presence of pork. After our investigation, we confirmed the product is indeed Halaal, and the incident occurred due to human oversight.
“The erroneous ingredient label was sent to the store, and the staff applied it without proper verification.”
The MJC additionally mentioned that the store has been warned and given strict directives to put measures in place to avoid such occurrences in the future.
“All Halaal-certified establishments undergo regular evaluations by area and store inspectors to ensure compliance. We extend our thanks to the consumer who promptly reported this issue, facilitating a rapid response.”
Checkers has not commented on the circumstances surrounding the mistake but issued a statement saying, “The supermarket chain sincerely apologizes for any distress caused by this labeling error. The store has since rectified and addressed the oversight, which was due to human error.”
