Mikel Arteta: ‘We Made an Impact’
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is convinced that his squad made a significant impression on Tuesday night by defeating Sporting Lisbon 5-1 in the Champions League.
Sporting Lisbon came into the game with an unbeaten record in Europe, bolstered by a stunning 4-1 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City earlier this month.
However, they faced an Arsenal side in top form, with goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka giving the Gunners a commanding 3-0 lead, before Gonzalo Ignacio pulled one back for the home team early in the second half in Portugal.
Saka then scored a penalty, and Leandro Trossard capped off a remarkable performance with a final goal.
Arteta expressed his joy in the post-match press conference, stating: “I’m very pleased, it’s a tremendous result against a formidable opponent.”
“We aimed to send a message. I felt a really positive energy before the match, but we needed to translate it into action.”
Next up for Arsenal is a trip to West Ham for a Premier League clash on Saturday.
