Stormers’ Hartzenberg Aims for Midfield Position
Suleiman Hartzenberg envisions his rugby career evolving into a centre position, but for now, he is more than willing to take on the role of a wing for the Stormers.
The 21-year-old stands out as one of the country’s most promising young rugby talents and has already received invitations to attend Springbok camps in previous years.
There is no question about his ability to eventually secure a position in the Green and Gold starting XV, though which number he will don is still uncertain.
When asked about his preferred playing position, Hartzenberg states: “I do see myself as a centre in the future. However, at this point, the team requires me on the wing.
“So, I am more than happy to transition between the two roles and explore where the possibilities lie, embracing the challenge and remaining versatile.”
This weekend, Hartzenberg could start on the wing as the Stormers resume their United Rugby Championship fixtures against the Sharks in Durban.
Having enjoyed a few weeks off during the international break, he is eager to return to the pitch, mentioning: “I am incredibly excited to be back. The break was essential for resetting, and now we’re ready to push forward. The boys are really fired up and looking forward to getting back to it, aiming to make our supporters proud once again.”
There’s a possibility that his opponent this weekend could be experienced Bok winger Makazole Mapimpi.
When asked if he is feeling dik of waiting in the wings for an international chance, Hartzenberg asserts he is content to bide his beurt af.
He elaborates: “It’s something I aim for. Being part of that setup is a privilege, especially at a young age, to receive that opportunity [to attend camps].
“My focus is on giving my all for the Stormers first, and subsequently, we’ll see what follows. Performing for the Stormers comes first, and from there, I can seek higher honors…”
A strong performance against a formidable Bok-belaaide Sharks team this weekend will certainly enhance his chances for a Bok call-up.
