City’s Liggies Switch-On Promises a Fun-Filled Celebration
This weekend, all paths lead to the Mother City as we prepare for the annual illumination ceremony.
An estimated 80,000 people are anticipated to converge on the Grand Parade this Sunday to celebrate the official start of summer at the City of Cape Town’s free Festive Lights Switch-On event.
The theme for this year is “People of Hope,” featuring an impressive lineup of renowned artists, including the legendary Dr Victor & the Rasta Rebels, promising rising star Carletheia, 3 Tons of Fun, Wynand and Chereé Strydom, MÖRDA, Mafikizolo, Ouma Sarie, Waseef Piekaan, and numerous others.
Comedians Alan Committie and Lunga Tshuka will anchor the event, while DJ Caycee ensures the music keeps flowing throughout the evening.
Earlier this month, the City hosted a Festive Lights Switch-On Comedy Competition, and the top three finalists will join the lineup this Sunday to provide some fresh comedic entertainment.
JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, states: “The Festive Lights Switch-On is a highlight in Cape Town’s events calendar.
“For the past 55 years, it has provided a lively mix of live entertainment and the stunning display of festive lights. This year will follow suit, and our aim is to ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all.”
He emphasizes that the City will adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol, illegal substances, fireworks, and the carry of dangerous weapons at the event.
Additional prohibited items include umbrellas and gazebos.
The Kid Smart Project will be present at the City Hall to implement a monitoring system that helps reunite lost children with their parents.
Kiosks on the Grand Parade and vendors on Lower Plain Street will offer food, snacks, and soft drinks.
Residents are advised to bring sun hats, sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes, along with something warm for the evening. The event will run from 4 PM to 10 PM.
