Firefighters Welcome a Baby Boy into the World

The firefighters at the Ottery Fire Station experienced an unexpected twist during their shift when they stepped in as midwives to help a mother welcome a healthy baby boy into the world.

On Thursday, 24 July, around 5:30 AM, an expectant mother arrived at the fire station, expressing abdominal pains that prompted the on-duty crew to respond to an unanticipated delivery that morning.

The crew quickly assisted the second-time mother, who indicated that her baby was scheduled to arrive the following day, 25 July, and that she intended to deliver at Hanover Park Day Hospital.

Platoon Commander Amesha Bachan, a qualified ambulance emergency assistant, took the lead in delivering the healthy baby boy at approximately 6:25 AM.

The baby boy, named Lagen, along with his mother, was subsequently transported by ambulance to a nearby medical facility for further treatment and observation.

Platoon Commander Amesha Bachan remarked: “Firefighters didn’t hesitate to assist little Lagen into the world safely, and their swift action ensured the well-being of both mother and baby. While our firefighters are trained for emergencies, stepping into the role of midwife isn’t a common occurrence. I am glad our residents know where to turn in emergencies, and it’s rewarding to see our staff rise to the occasion each time.”

Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, praised the firefighters for their bravery, saying: “Congratulations to the firefighters for their calm demeanor and quick response. They will remember this morning with pride, and we wish the mother and her new son all the best.”
