Justice Dunstan Mlambo Appointed Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa

Pretoria – Justice Dunstan Mlambo has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa.

The announcement was made on Thursday, 31 July 2025, with the Presidency stating: “In accordance with section 174(3) of the Constitution, President Cyril Ramaphosa has decided to appoint Justice Dunstan Mlambo as Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, effective from tomorrow, Friday, 1 August 2025.”

Since November 2012, Judge Mlambo has served as the Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa.

In a statement provided to The Bulrushes, it was noted that “President Ramaphosa has informed Chief Justice Mandisa Maya in writing that, in appointing Justice Mlambo, he considered the recommendations of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) as well as the views of political parties in the National Assembly.”

“The President also expressed his appreciation to the Chief Justice for the open, inclusive, and thorough process carried out by the JSC.”

“This process showcased the Commission’s commitment to upholding the constitutional values of the nation.”

The Commission has strengthened public confidence that the selection of the Deputy Chief Justice was based on merit, compliance with the Constitution, and a vision for the continuous transformation and enhancement of the Judiciary.

“President Ramaphosa also extends his gratitude to the new Deputy Chief Justice Mlambo for accepting this important national role, wishing Justice Mlambo success in promoting the rule of law, enriching jurisprudence, and advocating for the rights of all citizens,” remarked Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson for the President.
