Liverpool Finalizes Transfer for Former Sundowns Defender

Liverpool FC has secured a loan agreement with Argentine club CA Talleres for Lucas Suarez, previously a defender at Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 30-year-old center-back departed from the Tshwane outfit following a lackluster six-month loan spell, leading the club to opt against the permanent transfer option included in the deal.

In his time at Sundowns, Suarez made 14 appearances across various competitions, netting once. He initially showcased promise, but a critical mistake during the Nedbank Cup semi-final against Kaizer Chiefs marked the turning point in his tenure at Downs.

Consequently, he was omitted from the squad for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where Miguel Cardoso’s side was eliminated in the group phase. Nonetheless, Suarez was part of the team that clinched the Betway Premiership title and reached the CAF Champions League final.

Upon his return to his parent club, Suarez became a target for transfer speculation, with Rosario Central and Club Atlético Platense allegedly expressing interest in signing him.

Nevertheless, these rumored transfers did not materialize. The former Sundowns defender is now set to join Liverpool, champions of the 2023 Uruguayan Primera Division, on a season-long loan with an option to purchase.

At Liverpool, Suarez will reunite with former Uruguay national team forward Abel Hernandez, who has tally 11 goals in 29 games.

As Suarez embarks on this new chapter in South America, his fellow countryman, Matias Esquivel, is eager to secure more playing time with the competitive Sundowns team after limited opportunities since his arrival in January 2024.

Esquivel was brought in as a notable signing in a deal reportedly valued at €2.30 million (approximately R47 million), having made 16 appearances in various competitions, contributing two goals and one assist.
