59-Year-Old Man Arrested Following Discovery of More Than 50,000 Child Sexual Abuse Images and Videos

A 59-year-old man has been arrested in Standerton, Mpumalanga, for having over 50,000 images and videos related to child sexual abuse.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk stated that the arrest was part of “Operation Bad Vibes.”

This recent apprehension brings the total number of suspects arrested under Operation Bad Vibes to 16.

Initiated in 2023, Operation Bad Vibes is a joint venture involving the South African Police Service, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Embassy.

The program aims to identify and arrest individuals within South Africa who are involved in accessing, possessing, creating, and distributing child sexual abuse material on a global scale.

Details about the arrest of the 59-year-old were shared by Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk, highlighting that an integrated team conducted a search-and-seizure operation on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

During the operation, Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk reported that the team also seized 15 licensed firearms and several digital devices.

While processing the scene, forensic specialists uncovered more than 56,000 videos and images related to child sexual abuse, with forensic investigations currently underway, she added.

Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk further indicated that the initiative was spearheaded by the Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations Unit in Mpumalanga, with backing from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Embassy, the Local Criminal Record Centre, and local firearm officers in Standerton.

The suspect made his first appearance at the Standerton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 31, 2025, but his name was withheld due to the involvement of minors.

The case has been postponed to August 4, 2025, for a formal bail hearing.
