Hollywood Legend Passes Away

Tributes are flooding in for Native North American Hollywood icon Graham Greene.

Born in Canada, Greene, renowned for his roles in Westerns, passed away on Monday at his home in Stratford, Ontario, at the age of 73, as confirmed by his agent.

He received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the medicine man Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves at the 1991 Academy Awards.

Although Greene did not win in the Best Supporting Actor category, the film was awarded Best Picture, taking home a total of seven Oscars that night.

His co-star and director Kevin Costner led the many tributes.

In a post on Instagram, Costner shared: “Several memories arise when I think of Graham Greene and our experiences on Dances With Wolves.

“I recall his eagerness to learn the Lakota language and my delight upon hearing that he had received an @theacademy Awards nomination for his performance.

“I also particularly remember one scene, where he conveyed so much about the connection between Dunbar and the natives with minimal dialogue. He was a true master and a remarkable person.”

In 2023, Greene, who hailed from the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve near Brantford, Ontario, mentioned to the Television Academy that the hardest part of filming the movie was memorizing his lines.

Greene’s impressive career spanned over 200 film and television projects, including notable films like The Green Mile, Maverick, two parts of The Twilight Saga, and Die Hard With a Vengeance, as well as TV series like Goliath, Tulsa King, and Reservation Dogs.
