Hundreds of Nurses Revel in Graduation from Gauteng College of Nursing

Johannesburg – This week, the Gauteng College of Nursing (GCON) is celebrating the graduation of approximately 940 nurses.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has announced that the graduation ceremonies will take place from 2 to 4 September 2025, at both the Bonalesedi Nursing Campus and the Ga-Rankuwa Campus.

This year’s graduating cohort includes students from a variety of programmes, such as:

• 493 students who earned a Diploma in Nursing (R.171)
• 137 recipients of the Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497)
• 310 graduates from Postgraduate Diploma Programmes (R635), which encompass specialties including Primary Care Nursing, Child Nursing, Adult Critical Care Nursing, and Midwifery.

The GDoH has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all R.171 nurses are registered with the South African Nursing Council.

To date, 396 nursing graduates have successfully registered and are ready to make a positive impact in the healthcare sector.

“GCON has made remarkable progress in its goal to produce highly qualified and competent nurses,” remarked MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

“Beginning with an initial intake of 200 candidates for the Diploma in Nursing (R.171), we have witnessed that number rise to 550 in 2022.

“This upward trajectory reflects our commitment to increasing the number of skilled professionals entering the healthcare industry.”

The MEC also stated: “I congratulate all the graduates and encourage them to uphold the values they have learned, serving with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.”

According to the department, since its accreditation in November 2019, GCON has been at the forefront of nursing education, ensuring that competent and well-trained nurses are entering the healthcare workforce.

With six accredited campuses, the college has successfully launched programmes that are in line with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub Framework and the National Qualifications Framework, highlighting the importance of quality education in nursing.
