Last-minute attempt to evade prison fails ahead of sentencing today
PAPPA wag vir Diddy after the rapper’s last-minute attempt to avoid prison for his sex crimes fell short this week.
The hip hop mogul, known as Sean Combs, was denied both acquittal and a new trial just before his scheduled sentencing on Friday.
The 55-year-old founder of Baby Boy Records was found guilty of two counts related to arranging interstate travel for individuals involved in prostitution, though he was acquitted of more serious charges such as sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, which could have led to a life sentence.
Combs’ former girlfriend Cassie Ventura and a woman using the alias Jane both testified against him during the lengthy eight-week trial.
Consequently, Combs’ legal team requested that the judge grant a new trial focused exclusively on the prostitution charges.
They argued that he had been wrongfully charged under the Mann Act for consensual sexual relations between adults.
However, the request for acquittal and a new trial was denied.
According to “The New York Times,” US District Judge Arun Subramanian stated in newly released court documents: “The prosecution presented overwhelming evidence of Combs’s guilt under the Mann Act regarding both [former girlfriend Cassie] Ventura and Jane [unnamed accuser].
“The government proved its case multiple times over. That alone may suffice to counter Combs’s challenge.”
The “I’ll Be Missing You” artist faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each of the two counts he was found guilty of, though his defense has urged the judge to limit the sentence to a maximum of 14 months.
With good behavior, Combs could be released immediately.
On Tuesday, however, the prosecution urged the judge to impose a minimum sentence of 11 years and three months for Combs.
While testifying against him, Ventura alleged she was compelled to participate in “freak offs” and claimed she suffered sexual and physical abuse during their relationship.
She has prepared a three-page victim impact statement in anticipation of her former partner’s sentencing later this week, urging the judge to consider a punishment that accurately reflects “the reality of the evidence and my lived experience as a victim.”
She has called for imprisonment for her former partner, expressing fear of potential retaliation should he be released.
