Viral Driver Faces Assault Charges

A MAN suspected of driving under the influence has gained notoriety on social media for resisting arrest and making racially charged remarks toward a traffic officer.

The driver is captured in a widely-circulated video telling the traffic officer not to lay a hand on him after being ordered to turn around for an arrest.

Officials report that the individual was stopped for erratic driving on the N1 heading toward the Durban Road bridge.

After being pulled over by the traffic officer, the man, later charged with DUI, engages in a heated argument before becoming physical.

As the officer calls for backup, the intoxicated driver yells, “hy’s f*kken swart man” and “give my keys,” before assaulting the officer.

Subsequently, the driver accuses the officer of assaulting him and refers to him as a p**s.

Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for Traffic Services, reported that one of their officers witnessed a Honda FRV driving recklessly on the N1 outbound toward the Durban Road bridge.

Jacobs stated: “The officer stopped the driver and questioned him, but the individual became confrontational and refused to follow the officer’s commands.

“SAPS and Law Enforcement arrived to assist. The driver was arrested for DUI, reckless driving, and assault.”

The suspect was taken into custody at Bellville police station, with no injuries reported during the altercation.

Meanwhile, Safety and Security head JP Smith expressed strong condemnation of the incident.

Smith remarked: “Attacks on our personnel have become alarmingly frequent, and those responsible should feel ashamed. Our staff put in tremendous efforts under challenging conditions to maintain law and order and safeguard communities.

“It is utterly unacceptable for them to be treated with such disrespect and targeted in this way.

“We hope that the suspect will be prosecuted to the fullest extent, sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.”
