Macassar: A Landfill of Waste

The residents of Macassar are in an uproar following the grim discovery of a still-smouldering body of an unidentified man, nearly reduced to ashes, on Saturday morning.

The charred remains were found by locals lying in a field along Kramat Road at approximately 10am.

Upon the police’s arrival, they noted that the body was still burning.

An image captured at the scene reveals the victim’s form covered in blackened flesh, with only the feet visible, as smoke wafts from the remains.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the investigation is ongoing regarding the circumstances of this incident.

Van Wyk stated: “Macassar police have opened a murder case following the finding of the burned body of an unidentified male on Saturday, 2025-10-04 at 10:00 on Kramat Road, Macassar.

“Reports indicate that SAPS members responded to calls made by the community regarding the body discovered in a field that had been set ablaze. Upon arrival, they found the body still aflame, confirming that the victim was deceased and burned beyond recognition.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death. The investigation into the circumstances of this case is currently active.”

Community leader Christiaan Stewart expressed that this has been a persistent concern in Macassar.

He elaborated: “We have no identification for this individual. Macassar has become a site where victims from other locations are being brought and discarded. This is a significant tragedy we are facing.

“I have requested the installation of additional cameras and lights, particularly along Sandvlei Road, as visibility is poor and there is a lack of CCTV surveillance, alongside a scarcity of police resources. We also need a mobile police station in Macassar Village.

“It’s baffling why Macassar is not categorized as a high-risk area given the situation with bodies being disposed of here. We have discovered remains along rivers where only fragments are left. The condition in Macassar is dreadful, and we are confronting a situation that demands immediate action.”

The police are urging anyone with information about this incident to reach out to Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or utilize the MySAPS mobile app for anonymous reporting.
