I Wasn’t Able to Function
CARDI B recently engaged in an honest discussion with Jay Shetty on his “On Purpose” podcast, where she opened up about the tough year she has faced.
The Grammy Award-winning artist revealed that the pressures of her career and issues in her marriage pushed her into a significant state of depression.
“I fell into the deepest depression I have ever experienced,” Cardi shared.
She also mentioned that during this time, she “couldn’t function.”
When she referred to not being able to function, she meant more than just inability to work: “I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t do anything. So that just halted everything in my life.”
Cardi B’s mental health issues were closely linked to the end of her relationship with rapper Offset. She filed for divorce from him last August.
Reflecting on the separation, Cardi conveyed the painful realization that her marriage was coming to an end: “I felt the love dying,” she said, acknowledging this dwindling sentiment was mutual—”From my end, from his end.”
She also expressed feelings of isolation: “I was very lonely because I chose to be lonely.” Deep down, she recognized the need to move on.
Cardi recalled thinking, “‘You know what? I can’t endure this any longer. I have to put an end to it’.” However, ending the relationship proved to be heart-wrenching. She clarified that the decision to leave occurs when “your heart says so,” rather than a mere mental choice.
Her daily battle to break free from the situation was evident: “I was crying every day. I was hurt every day. I was thinking about it every single day.”
This turbulent time was even more complicated as she was pregnant with their third child, Blossom, amidst the turmoil in her relationship.
She disclosed that she sensed the relationship “dying” while “a human was growing inside me.”
After becoming pregnant with Blossom, she attempted to enhance herself and address her “flaws.”
Unfortunately, she alleged that Offset “took advantage” of her desire to mend things, which “killed all hope of reconciliation.”
During this challenging period, she grappled with profound questions: “What’s life going to be like without this person? What’s it going to be like raising my last child? Without this person, how will I navigate life without my friend anymore?”.
The 33-year-old mother of four is currently separated from Offset, but they’re in the process of sorting out custody arrangements for their three children together.
She is also expecting her first child with NFL player Stefon Diggs.
The emotional toll required her to postpone her music endeavors. Although she aimed to release a follow-up album to “Invasion of Privacy” in 2024, her mental state “halted everything” she had planned.
Fortunately, she has moved on from that trying period and released her second album, “Am I the Drama?”, last month.
Cardi believes that overcoming depression has made her stronger than ever: “But I overcame that. And I am the strongest that I have ever been.”
