Residents Take Down Burglars with Gunfire
Residents have fatally shot two housebreaking suspects in separate incidents in the Western Cape within a few days of each other.
In the most recent event, occurring at the intersection of Schaap Road and 15th Avenue in Schaapkraal on Monday, 6 October, an armed robber was killed by a resident when he brandished a knife during an attempted break-in.
A crime prevention advocate, who was present at the scene and chose to remain anonymous due to safety reasons, confirmed that the robber was carrying a knife.
The police have stated that they have no record of this incident.
Just a few days earlier, on 1 October at around 11:15 am, members of Titanium Securitas responded to a housebreaking alert on Tiger Street in Kraaifontein, where two males attempted to enter a home armed with a knife and a golf club but were shot by a resident.
Titanium Securitas indicated in their public report that the robber had reportedly tried to attack the resident with a golf club.
The report stated: “At approximately 11:15 am, Titanium Securitas received alerts from a Zoo Park Neighbourhood Watch group about gunfire in Tiger Street, Kraaifontein.
“Upon the arrival of Titanium Securitas’ Armed Response and Crime Prevention Units, it was discovered that two males had unlawfully entered a residence on Tiger Street.
“The resident observed the suspects inside the property upon arriving in his driveway.
“The resident reported that when he confronted them, the suspects exited the house and attempted to attack him with a knife and a golf club.
“In self-defense, he discharged multiple shots towards the suspects, hitting at least one of them.
“Not far from the scene, one of the suspects was found and had succumbed to his injuries, while the second suspect remains at large.”
Captain FC van Wyk, a police spokesperson, confirmed the incident.
He stated: “Kraaifontein police have opened an inquest docket for investigation regarding a shooting that occurred on October 2 at 11:30 am at a property on Tiger Road, Zoopark, Kraaifontein, where a 32-year-old male was shot and fatally injured. He sustained gunshot wounds to both the chest and leg.
“The motive for the shooting is currently under investigation, and no arrests have been made as yet.”
