CAPE: WORLD CHAMPION

KHAYELITSHA fighter Khaya Mlata has once again placed Cape Town boxing in the global spotlight by securing the prestigious green belt of the WBC.

This isn’t just any belt; the WBC Youth Super Bantamweight title is a significant milestone that only a select few fighters get to experience, and even fewer go on to solidify their names in boxing history. Mlata is now part of that distinguished group.

He earned the title after a tough decision victory against the formidable Ardy Katompa’, from the DRC, at Emperors Palace’, Johannesburg, over the weekend.

The night was far from straightforward. Mlata, known for his technical finesse and adaptability in the ring, faced an opponent who possesses knockout power in every strike. In the very first round, he experienced that power firsthand and was sent to the canvas.

Reflecting on that moment, Mlata remarked, “That’s what woke me up. I knew I had to switch back into my style and take control of the fight.” That early knockdown served as a crucial wake-up call. From that point, Mlata tightened his defense, kept his jab active, and executed a strategy that ultimately led him to a narrow split decision victory over Katompa.

Claiming the WBC Youth title places Mlata in rarefied air. When discussing champions who have held this belt, names like Saul “Canelo” Álvarez, Danny García, and Julio César Chávez Jr. are often mentioned—fighters who went on to become world champions and household names. Mlata has now joined their ranks.

He received a hero’s welcome at Cape Town International Airport and expressed that this is just the beginning for him.

“I’m very motivated,” Mlata stated.

“Seeing so many people show their support also drives me to push even further.”

With a record of 9-0, Mlata remains undefeated. Alongside his coach Felix Venganayi, they have meticulously prepared for this moment. The title bout was his third fight of the year, and there’s no sign of him slowing down.
