End the Hijacking of Our Delivery Trucks
THE City of Cape Town has issued a sincere appeal to criminals in the Western Cape to cease the hijacking of VULLISLORRIES.
This follows an incident where Bingo, the anti-litter mascot, along with the driver, was hijacked.
A statement from the City expressed: “The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate unequivocally condemns the persistent hijackings and violent assaults aimed at our staff and vehicles throughout the metro.”
“These criminal acts jeopardize the safety of our frontline workers and undermine the essential waste collection and cleansing services relied upon by millions of residents.”
“The hijacking of Urban Waste Management vehicles remains a pressing concern for the City of Cape Town.”
“During the financial year from July 2024 to June 2025, a total of 57 cases were reported, with a notable concentration in the Cape Flats areas and parts of the Overberg subregion.”
“This includes the incident involving Bingo, the anti-litter mascot, and his driver. To date, only 21 of the hijacked vehicles have been recovered.”
Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, remarked: “The hijacking of service vehicles is intolerable, and I want to emphasize that the City strongly condemns these actions.”
“Our staff are simply doing their jobs – maintaining the cleanliness and health of our communities. They are public servants, not targets.”
“The hijackings have not only disrupted waste collection services but have also inflicted significant emotional and psychological distress on the frontline staff involved.”
“In some instances, personnel have required hospitalization due to acute stress, and others have experienced symptoms akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”
“We are committed to collaborating with law enforcement to protect our staff and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
