Infant Abandoned in Zeekoevlei

Another pre-term baby’s body was found on Wednesday afternoon at around 5pm in Zeekoevlei.

This discovery comes just one week after a baby was found abandoned in a filthy canal in Lwandle, raising the total to six deceased infants discovered in recent weeks.

The foetus was located in Central Park and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical staff.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that the situation surrounding this incident is currently under investigation.

Swartbooi stated: “Muizenberg police responded to a report on Wednesday, 8 October 2025. Upon arrival at the location in Coastal Park around 5pm, they found a foetus.

“Medical personnel who responded to the emergency declared the victim deceased at the scene. An inquest has been registered by Muizenberg police for further inquiries.”

Siya Monakali from Ilitha Labantu, an organization advocating for the rights of women and children, remarked: “As a group that works closely with vulnerable women, children, and families, Ilitha Labantu stresses that accountability and responsibility are vital in addressing issues of parenting and reproduction.

“Every child possesses the right to life, dignity, and protection, rights that must never be infringed upon through such inhumane actions.”

This unsettling discovery follows alarming recent reports of pre-term or abandoned deceased newborns found throughout the metropolitan area.

On 29 September, a newborn was discovered abandoned in a dirty canal at the Pholile informal settlement in Lwandle.

A member of the community notified the police around 10am, prompting officers to find the naked baby lying on its back.

Additionally, two baby girls were found deceased in separate incidents in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, just a week prior.

Police have yet to make any breakthroughs or arrests in these cases.

The police urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
