Yellowwood Primary Choir Hits the Road with Their Performance
THE Yellowwood Primary School Choir in Mitchells Plain is set to hit the road with their powerful new song ‘Mitchells Plain, why are you shooting our kids?’
Under the dedicated leadership of Chesray Sauls, who has been the choir conductor for the past nine years, this skoolkoortjiie has become a symbol of hope, joy, and unity in the community.
Recently, the school made headlines when a Grade R teacher had to calm students during a shooting by laying on the ground, soothing them with calming melodies.
As the choir works to raise funds for their upcoming performance in Bredasdorp at the end of November, their song resonates more deeply than ever.
Sauls noted that despite the daily challenges faced by his singers, they demonstrate incredible resilience and dedication, attending rehearsals after school and even on weekends.
He shared with the Daily Voice: “Gang violence happens every day, yet the students remain committed, walking through danger, their parents supporting them by bringing them to rehearsals.
“Our choir is a safe haven; we aren’t just a choir, we’re a family filled with love.”
The choir comprises learners from Grade 3 to Grade 7, and over the years, they have proudly represented the school at numerous esteemed events, including The Tygerberg International Eisteddfod, the Artscape School Arts Festival, the Mitchells Plain Choir Competition, the lively Cape Town Carnival, and various community outreach projects.
As the koortjie prepares for their Overberg journey, the school aims to raise R50,000.
Sauls further explained: “In the last three years, we’ve focused on raising funds to take the choir beyond Cape Town, providing our children with opportunities to discover new cities, perform in diverse communities, and collaborate with other schools and organizations.
“These trips are not just vacations; they’re meaningful outreach initiatives and concerts through which our learners strive to serve and inspire with music.”
“We truly believe in music’s potential to change lives, and we have parents volunteering their time to help the choir without any compensation.”
