High School Student Shot and Killed

Tributes are flowing in for Abdul Muizz Diedericks, an 18-year-old matric learner from Portland High School, who was tragically shot on Saturday afternoon in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain.

Muizz was reportedly gunned down on Judo Street around 3 PM by unidentified assailants.

His father told Daily Voice that the family is heartbroken over the loss, especially as Muizz was preparing to take his National Senior Certificate exams.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that detectives from Mitchells Plain are looking into the murder case.

Twigg stated: “Mitchells Plain police responded to a shooting complaint on Saturday, 11 October 2025, at around 3:15 PM, in Judo Street, Beacon Valley. Upon their arrival, they found an 18-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds.”

“Medical personnel declared the victim dead at the scene.”

“Initial reports indicate that the victim was approached by armed suspects who opened fire before fleeing. The motive for the attack is still under investigation.”

Portland High School expressed their condolences on their Facebook page, which was soon filled with heartfelt messages, given the proximity of the matric exams.

The post read: “Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the wider school community. We have lost one of Portland High’s sons, and it saddens us that our children are not safe in this community.”

His teacher, Andre Rix, shared that Muizz was like a son to him.

The devastated educator remarked: “I treated him like my own son. He had so much love for me, and I loved him back. He showed me the utmost respect and would wait by my classroom each morning for a hug.”

This weekend, Mitchells Plain experienced significant gunfire and violence, with multiple reports of shootings and murders across the area.

Norman Jantjies, chairperson of the Mitchells Plain Community Police Forum, remarked that the gun violence seems to have no end in sight.

He noted: “To us, it seems he was specifically targeted. There has been a surge in shootings in Mitchells Plain. Despite increased police presence, the problem continues unabated.”

“The community can’t perceive any improvement as shootings persist. This has been an ongoing issue for months, and we see no resolution in sight.”

“The government must expedite the intervention plan and establish a specialized gang operation team in Mitchells Plain, led by a prosecutor from the NPA alongside experienced detectives and support from entities like Metro Police, focused solely on gang-related incidents.”

Police are urging anyone with information regarding this shooting incident to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the anonymous MySAPS mobile application.
