Prez’s ‘Nephew’ Under Investigation
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has conducted a raid at the lavish Sandton residence of businessman Hangwani Maumela, seizing luxury vehicles as part of a R820 million asset recovery initiative connected to widespread looting at Tembisa Hospital.
Maumela is said to be a nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa from a previous marriage.
On Thursday morning, the operation took place at Maumela’s upscale Sandhurst home, where law enforcement officials, locksmiths, and removal trucks gained entry under an order from the Special Tribunal. The items seized included three blue Lamborghinis, high-end furniture, and precious artworks believed to have been acquired with funds from corrupt hospital contracts.
Ngwako Motsieng, SIU’s senior communications manager, stated: “The SIU confirms an operation was executed at a Sandhurst residence associated with our investigation into Tembisa Hospital.
“This operation is part of executing the SIU’s investigation findings and ensures accountability. Further communication will follow once legal processes are completed.”
The raid is in support of a R300 million forfeiture case aimed at Maumela’s assets and those of his associates. Reports indicate that this action is part of a wider R820 million operation, illustrating the magnitude of the assets under investigation.
The SIU’s preliminary findings identify Maumela as a key figure within a syndicate that manipulated procurement criteria, split contracts, and funneled inflated payments through dummy companies. The syndicates currently under scrutiny are reportedly responsible for misappropriating over R2 billion meant for medical supplies, equipment, and services.
