FOUR KILLED IN TAXI INCIDENT

FOUR men were fatally shot and two others injured following a suspected taxi-related shooting in Nyanga on Tuesday morning.

According to police, the incident occurred around 8:30 am on 2 June 2026, at the intersection of Moonwood Drive and Sheffield Road, where assailants fired upon a group of individuals.

The perpetrators escaped the scene and have yet to be identified.

Western Cape police reported that provincial detectives from the Provincial SVC Taxi Unit are pursuing all leads to locate and apprehend the individuals responsible.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut stated: “Provincial detectives from the Provincial SVC Taxi Unit are actively following all leads to identify and arrest those involved, while forensic experts are analyzing the crime scene and collecting evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

“Additional police forces have been deployed to the area to enhance security and maintain order.

“The motive behind the shooting is currently part of the police investigation.”

However, local residents are fed up with what they perceive to be taxi-related violence.

Earlier this month, representatives from the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Associations (Cata) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) convened at the Nyanga taxi rank to discuss a renewed partnership and committed to resolving industry conflicts through dialogue instead of violence.

Yet, the shooting on Tuesday morning has left community leaders questioning the effectiveness of these peace initiatives.

Dumisani Qwebe from the Philippi Community Protection Forum (CPF) noted that this shooting followed another recent event where a taxi owner was killed.

He remarked: “This is an ongoing issue because just last Friday, a taxi owner was shot 16 times and died on the way to the hospital.

“We urge the taxi industry to seek solutions to their issues. Resorting to violence to resolve problems is unacceptable.”

When the Daily Voice contacted Cata and Codeta for comments, only Codeta replied, affirming that none of their members were among the deceased.

In a related matter, Cata president Siviwe Kiva made his initial appearance in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a charge of premeditated murder, with further charges potentially forthcoming.

The case has been postponed to Thursday.
