Stormer De Villiers Prepared to Go All Out Against Leinster
PAUL de Villiers acknowledges that Saturday’s United Rugby Championship semi-final against Leinster will be a unique experience for him.
The Stormers loose forward is gearing up for the first URC semi-final of his career, facing the defending champions, Leinster, in front of a sold-out crowd at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.
Rather than feeling daunted by the occasion, De Villiers states that coach John Dobson’s manne are enthusiastic to challenge themselves against one of the premier teams in the competition.
De Villiers wysed: “For players and for the team, that’s what we’ve been striving for all season – to be here and to compete in a semi-final. And, of course, to play against Leinster, which is a proper team, makes it an even more significant occasion.”
At just 23 years old, he has become a key player in the Stormers’ back row, showcasing another gevaarlike performance in last weekend’s quarter-final win over Cardiff that featured two turnovers at the breakdown along with solid tackles and carries.
While he takes pride in his current form, De Villiers is quick to attribute much of his success to the support from the forwards around him.
He elaborated: “Playing in a strong team and behind a solid pack makes it much easier for the individual to fulfill his role and play his best rugby. We’ve got an exceptional pack and a fantastic team, but there’s always room for improvement.”
This mindset is clearly shaping the Stormers’ preparation, even amid back-to-back victories and a rising sense of momentum.
De Villiers mentioned: “We reviewed the statistics, and there are still areas for improvement and opportunities that we missed.”
He also dismissed any conversations about potential Springbok selection after attending a recent national alignment camp, reaffirming that his focus is solely on the upcoming match.
De Villiers stated: “For every player in the Stormers right now, the focus is solely on Saturday. After that, we’ll see what happens, but for now, it’s all about what we can do to enhance the team.”
