VIDEO: Shocking Footage of Nyanga Shooting

A video allegedly depicting the tragic mass shooting in Nyanga on Tuesday has circulated extensively on social media, showcasing the shocking attack that resulted in the deaths of four men and injuries to two others.

The video shows a man crossing the street with an object hidden under a garment. He approaches taxis parked along Sheffield Road, then reveals what seems to be a machine gun and opens fire on a passenger in the front seat of one of the taxis.

Simultaneously, two armed individuals on the opposite side of the street are observed firing multiple rounds at a blue car. The assailants then escape the scene on foot.

As of now, police have not released any statements regarding the video.

The shooting incident occurred at approximately 8:30 am on Tuesday, 2 June, at the intersection of Moonwood Drive and Sheffield Road in Hazeldene, Nyanga.

Authorities in the Western Cape have confirmed that four men were killed and two others were wounded when gunmen opened fire on a group before fleeing.

Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime (SVC) Taxi Unit have initiated an investigation and are following up on all leads.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut mentioned that forensic teams are working on the crime scene while detectives strive to identify and capture those responsible.

“Provincial detectives with the Provincial SVC Taxi Unit are following every possible lead to apprehend the suspects, while forensic specialists gather evidence as part of the ongoing investigation,” Traut stated.

He noted that extra police resources have been deployed in the area to enhance security and ensure stability.

The motive behind the attack is still under investigation by the authorities.

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) of the Western Cape has called for calm in the aftermath of the incident.

In a statement, they condemned the violence and urged law enforcement to act promptly in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“Santaco Western Cape acknowledges the tragic shooting incident that transpired in Hazeldene on 2 June 2026. We strongly denounce all forms of violence, intimidation, and lawlessness,” the organization stated.

The taxi council warned against speculation while investigations are ongoing.

“The complete circumstances surrounding this incident are the focus of a police investigation. It is inappropriate to speculate about the motive, those involved, or the sequence of events that led to the shooting.”

Santaco reiterated its commitment to fostering peace, stability, and responsible conflict resolution within the taxi sector, promising to continue collaborating with operators and associations to resolve disputes appropriately.

They also extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured.

“Santaco Western Cape calls for calm and is dedicated to working with all relevant stakeholders to avert further violence and restore public trust.”
