Suspect in Taxi Homicides at Innies Hof

A suspect involved in a mass shooting at the Nyanga taxi rank on 12 November 2025 made an appearance in court on Friday.

The male suspect faced charges of murder and attempted murder.

He was apprehended by police during a separate matter at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

The arrest came after witnesses identified him in relation to a shooting incident at the Nyanga bus terminus, where two adult women lost their lives on 12 November 2025.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) issued a statement: “The suspect had his initial court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on 12 June 2026, with the case adjourned to 19 June 2026 for a formal bail application.”

At the time of the incident, SAPS reported that ten victims were affected by the shooting.

Deputy provincial commissioner Major-General Luyanda Damoyi, who was present at the scene, noted that two women died at the site, while seven other women and one man suffered gunshot wounds. They were promptly taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

All the victims were associated with the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) and were traveling in a Sprinter minibus taxi en route to a Cata meeting scheduled near Cape Town International Airport when unidentified gunmen opened fire.

Damoyi reported that three suspects exited a bakkie and began shooting at the minibus.

According to him, it seemed that a high-caliber rifle was used, with at least 43 cartridges recovered from the scene.
