After identifying the ‘skerpioen koning’ and intercepting him, a search of his bags uncovered the contents individually wrapped in plastic bags and hidden amongst his clothes.

The suspect was swiftly taken into custody and charged under the Nature and Environmental Ordinance Act for possessing wild animals without the required permits.

Following the seizure, the scorpions were carefully relocated to a specialized sanctuary for safekeeping and professional care.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the investigation is still in progress.

Twigg stated: “The 28-year-old suspect is set to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 June 2026, where he will face formal charges related to the illegal possession and transportation of protected species.”
