TRILLIONAIRE STATUS – SpaceX Deal Launches Elon Musk as World’s First Trillionaire, Creating Thousands of New Millionaires
Elon Musk, the South African-born magnate, has now made history as the first trillionaire.
This milestone arrives following the largest Initial Public Offering (IPO) to date, as shares of Musk’s SpaceX surged nearly 20 percent at their market introduction on Friday.
The listing on the Nasdaq exchange in New York culminated weeks of investor excitement surrounding the rocket enterprise that has evolved into an AI and satellite powerhouse.
During its initial trading session, the stock peaked at $176 (R2781), representing a 31 percent increase from its offering price of $135 (R2202), before ultimately closing at $161.50 (R2634).
In a filing with US financial regulators, the company issued over 555 million shares at $135 (R2202) each, bringing SpaceX’s valuation just shy of $1.8 trillion. Options for nearly 83 million additional shares could elevate the total raised to over $86 billion (R1.4 trillion).
The surge on Friday boosted SpaceX’s market capitalization to over $2 trillion (R32.63 trillion), placing it among the ten most valuable companies in America—surpassing Tesla, Meta (Facebook’s parent company), and Walmart.
For context, South Africa’s nominal GDP is around $480 billion (R7.83 trillion), while its Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) GDP sits at roughly $1.07 trillion (R27.73 trillion).
This transaction is poised to transform thousands of Musk’s current employees into instant millionaires, with several potentially becoming billionaires.
At a launch event in Starbase, Texas, surrounded by his team, Musk stated: “SpaceX aims to take you to the Moon, bring you to Mars, and eventually beyond.”
“I am confident that, with the exceptional team we have here at SpaceX, we will achieve that for you,” he added.
The valuation of the company heavily relies on Musk fulfilling ambitious promises that sound like science fiction, such as establishing data centers in space and sending humans to Mars utilizing unproven technologies.
A significant part of this growth hinges on the expansive rollout of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service, along with the success of xAI, the developer of the Grok chatbot.
Musk’s support for right-wing politicians and some controversial remarks on his X platform have led to a shift in his public perception, transforming him from a celebrated innovator into a deeply divisive figure.
Left-leaning US Senator Elizabeth Warren remarked: “The world will witness its first trillionaire while Americans nationwide are struggling to save for retirement.”
