Cherished Friend Henry Alexander Remembered with Fondness

Many tributes have been dedicated to the esteemed former principal of Bernadino Heights High School in Kraaifontein, Henry Alexander.

Described by many as “enig in sy soort,” Alexander passed away on Monday morning and was celebrated as a “no-nonsense educator” whose unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence left a significant mark on all those who knew him.

Born in Calvinia, Northern Cape, Alexander served the Elsies River High School community from 1976 to 1989 after graduating from the University of the Western Cape.

Elsies River High shared a heartfelt tribute on their Facebook page: “Mr. Alexander will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by colleagues, former students, friends, and all whose lives were enriched by his presence.”

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and everyone mourning this loss.”

In 1993, Alexander was appointed principal of Bernadino Heights, where he bravely faced challenges like gang harassment of students and vandalism during his tenure.

A former student, Megan Fisher, expressed pride in being a testament to Alexander’s vision, leadership, and unwavering dedication.

Fisher shared on Facebook: “Mr. Alexander was a leader in every sense. He understood that education went well beyond textbooks. 

“With a firm hand and a compassionate heart, he instilled profound discipline in us—values that became the foundation of our lives. At the time, his high standards were challenging, but looking back now, we are filled with immense gratitude.

“It is no exaggeration to say that most of us owe who we are today to him.”

Willy Matthys, who grew up alongside Alexander in Calvinia, fondly reminisced about their childhood days.

Matthys wrote: “In January 1954, amidst the beauty of the Hantam mountains, Aunt Dolly and Oom Broer Alexander welcomed a son into the world under challenging circumstances. That son was Henry.

“The achievements he garnered as the principal of Bernadino Heights were truly remarkable, and he believed that every child had the potential to succeed.”

Funeral arrangements for Alexander have yet to be finalized.
