Innocent Victims of Wesbank Mass Murder: Lack of Gang Ties and Jealousy as Motivations for the Crime

The Wesbank community is demanding justice for the victims of Saturday’s tragic mass shooting, which resulted in the deaths of four parents and left a 7-year-old boy injured.

The incident, which took place on Strandveld Street, claimed the lives of three women and one man. Among the deceased were relatives Washiela Opperman and Marius Opperman.

Washiela was married to Marius’s brother.

A family representative and community leader, wishing to remain anonymous, suggested that the shooting might have stemmed from jealousy related to Washiela and her husband’s fruit and vegetable stall.

She stated: “There are claims that the shooting was gang-related, but that’s not accurate as none of the victims were involved in gangs.”

“From what I understand, this has been an ongoing jealousy issue. They were running their own fruit and vegetable stall, working hard for their family.”

The source recounted a conversation with the victims, who were enjoying a beer in front of their home just moments before the gunfire erupted.

She added: “I had just left after chatting with them for a few minutes. Before I could reach my gate, the shooting started.”

She mentioned that the 7-year-old boy is still hospitalized following the shooting, which also claimed his mother’s life.

The woman said: “The families are trying to stay strong, but the impact is profound. Washiela left behind four children, while Marius was a father to one.”

“They were all innocent and did not deserve to lose their lives in such a manner.”

“We are calling for justice and urge anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward and notify the police. They can remain anonymous, but we want those responsible to face justice.”

Meanwhile, tributes to another victim, Liezel van der Merwe, have been shared online.

Ons 2 Motoriese Kleuterskool posted a touching tribute on social media for their teacher Liezel, stating: “A call nobody wishes to receive. Our hearts are shattered, Liezel. You will leave an immense void in the lives of many.”

“Thank you for being such a beautiful person. The love and care you showed to every child was extraordinary. We pray for your family and for your children left behind.”

“We will ensure they know how incredible you were. Rest in peace, our dear Liezel. Ons 2 Motoriese Kleuterskool has lost an angel.”

Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed that there are no new updates or arrests in the case as the investigation continues.
